Melissa Markell was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended Santa Monica City College and UCLA. Melissa’s expressive collage work is created with the use of old books and magazines, vintage postcards, antique maps, found objects and handmade papers. Her work is thematic telling a visual story and is often historical or whimsical. The collages appear to have more than two dimensions. Melissa’s use of light and dark papers and imagery give her work the feeling that you are looking deeper and deeper inside of a world created by the artist. From her collages of Europe’s old world charm to the fun loving scenes nostalgic of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s Melissa can tell a story with the combination of imagery and style which is uniquely her own. Melissa’s work has been purchased and commissioned by many hotels and restaurants as well as by corporate offices and private collectors.
