The Admiral Hotel
Curio Collection by Hilton®
Design Group: Flick Mars
KBFA and Flick Mars worked together to give this property a new lease on life with a remodel and fine art consultancy that would bring this charming hotel into the Hilton Curio Collection in style.
Formerly the Admiral Semmes Hotel, this 1940s hotel was named for Admiral Raphael Semmes, an officer in the Confederate navy officer and notorious raider. In the art curation process of the redesign, KBFA’s art consultants selected hotel art pieces that would compliment the gorgeous art deco look of this property as well as pay homage to the legacy to Admiral Semmes.
The voice of the hotel’s namesake can be found splashed across the walls of the lobby of The Admiral Hotel in script overlaid on large canvas wall coverings. The words come from Admiral Semmes’ memoir wherein he discusses the South’s struggles against the Federal Constitution in 1861 which caused the state of Alabama to join the Confederacy. Art featuring enlarged playing cards, a nod to Mobile’s history as the birthplace of Mardi Gras, were aged to add a touch of vintage playfulness to the aesthetic of this stately hotel. In heightening the elegance of The Admiral Hotel without obscuring its beautiful and historic bones, our art consultants strived to ensure that this Southern Belle will live on in style.
“Working on the The Admiral Hotel, our team had a chance to help bring a beautiful, old property back to life. In the end, the work we did became this exquisite, curated space that many people will be able to enjoy for generations to come, and that’s tremendously satisfying.”
